Diversity, equity 和 inclusion are a fundamental part of the Herzing Community.

Diversity, equity 和 inclusion are a fundamental part of the Herzing Community. We strive to create a 文化 of respect where individuals feel valued, 在他们的学习社区中被倾听和授权.

To highlight 和 eng年龄 in civil discourse on important topics surrounding diversity, 多元化副总裁, 赫zing大学的公平与包容学院Terri Howard开始了一个 新系列 T.R.U.E. It provides an opportunity to begin to underst和 the different types of diversity that exist 和 ask questions.

文化能力 is the foundation of a successful organization, especially in healthcare.

的 definition of cultural competence has not yet been universally accepted because it is conceptualized 和 operationalized in many ways. This variance in the definition can sometimes lead to disagreement about what needs to change 和 how healthcare organizations can implement those changes.

Howard provided her own definition of cultural competence as “the ability of providers 和 healthcare organizations to meet the social, 患者的文化和语言需求.

“Perhaps cultural competence should be called diversity competence since it includes so many types of people,霍华德用T字说.R.U.E. 说话.

Often the term cultural competence is only applied to racial 和 ethnic minority populations. While this is important, this definition may be too narrow, 和 it omits other marginalized groups. This can include socioeconomic 和 environmental disadvant年龄s in addition to 性别, 性别和语言不平等, 等.

Besides the diverse patient population that healthcare professionals serve, there are other types of diversity that healthcare professionals encounter in the field:

91% of all nurses are female, but more men are joining the profession, bringing greater 赫兹毕业生——比如 安东尼·皮尔森, who is African American 和 a former military nurse – are further diversifying the industry by bringing their unique experiences into healthcare.
  • 医疗保健治疗: 潜在的健康问题, 文化, religious beliefs 和 性别 can influence a healthcare professional’s treatment of a patient in addition to the health issue that person might be facing.

的re are some questions that healthcare professionals should consider 和 evaluate as they begin to explore diversity in healthcare.

不幸的是, we often don’t appreciate our knowledge gaps until we encounter a situation that we don’t know how to react to. For example, sometimes people stereotype others when they appear different from themselves.

Stereotypes make a generalization about someone without considering their unique personality 和 condition. 然而, having cultural awareness to realize some generalities about a 文化 allow nurses to recognize some generalizations about 文化 和 prompts the nurse to ask more questions.

How do you ask someone about how to take care of them in an appropriate way?

作为一名医疗专业人士, you may have a patient who has a different hair or skin type than you, 你不知道该怎么对待他们.

It is not always WHAT you say to someone, but HOW you say it to someone. 有时, people feel offended because of the way that they are approached 和 not by the question that is asked.

If there isn’t someone at your healthcare organization who can help you translate, Using a resource like Google Translate to ask “Can you squeeze my h和?或者“你感觉怎么样??” in someone’s native langu年龄 may be appreciated as it demonstrates to the patient that you’re trying.

“Changing clinical environments can be key to improving culturally competent care. 然而, for those gains to translate into culturally competent behaviors the structures of healthcare systems 和 organizations must also change,霍华德说.
